A property investor has revealed his latest unique and bespoke renovation for a student house – but social media users have been quick to slam the decision.
James Coupland, who purchased his first home using his student loan at age 19, owns an impressive portfolio of buy-to-let properties.
The 30-year-old from York recently hit headlines after revealing his renovation of a standard student home, which left social media users scratching their heads.

The property, which cost £50,000 to makeover, saw people questioning his logic, saying “students will only trash it”.
But the investor and developer believe the exact opposite and have now left people shocked online after creating a “truly unique” room – but not everyone is on board.
“The highlight of the property is what we call the Moon Room,” James told Luxury Property News.
“The space, designed as a student’s bedroom with ample workspace, has been outfitted with some standout features inspired by popular culture.
“With a touch of a golden buzzer, similar to the one seen on Britain’s Got Talent, the main lighting dims and specialised feature lighting actives.
“It reveals a giant moon lit from behind with LEDs.
“Above, a stretch ceiling embedded with over 1,000 fibre optics provides a starry night effect, bringing an immersive, tranquil atmosphere.”
He shared the room on Instagram, racking up over 128,000 views and thousands of likes.
In the clip, he begins by saying this is “one of the best rooms” he’s ever created in one of the rental properties.
James then breaks down the costs and the process, including using Artex for £23 to create the moon itself.
He demonstrates how it all works, where the moon “comes to life”.
The effect is truly out-of-this-world – but not everyone agrees.
“I think it’s a waste of money for students home,” Levina added.
Germaine said: “This is amazing honestly but it’s a lot of effort for university students that will not appreciate all this effort.”
“Far too dark. Keep it simple. White grey,” Tom commented.
Another user added: “Just wait for the student party’s when it gets trashed.”
“There’s way too much time, money and care put into that to just let out to students…it looks stunning,” someone else commented.
James captioned the post: “Over the moon
“The idea to create this room came from our desire to do something different, as we were a little bored of doing similar interiors in our properties
“We could have rented this property on Airbnb or as a house share to university students.
“I prefer the latter.”
The home, which features sleek strip lighting, chic herringbone flooring and panelling, took six months to transform.
As a former student himself, he knows the common stereotype of student accommodation and hopes to challenge this with his efforts.
James, who is a teacher at the James Property University where he offers advice and support, added: “My aim as a property investor has always been to redefine this stereotype by creating quality homes that not only meet but exceed, expectations.
“When you offer tenants a high standard of accommodation and respond promptly to maintenance issues, they’re more likely to take pride in their space.
“This property will be rented to three university students at £140 per person, which will generate a gross income of £21,840 annually.
“I believe the quality and unique features justify the process.
“Remember; focus on durability, think unique and understand your tenant.
“This refurbishment is a reflection of our commitment to breaking the mould in student housing; offering something more than just a place to stay.
“It’s about creating a home that students can truly enjoy and respect, which in turn, protects my investment.”
