Patrons were passed the beer through a hole in the wall to then sit beside the house, but outside the boundary, and relax looking out over the water.

The three-bedroom property is in Barton Turf, Norwich, on the Norfolk Broads.

It is described as a landmark for those who live locally and visit the area, as reported by Luxury Property News.

Its listing says: “A pretty cottage, set on the edge of Barton Staithe and being the last house before you reach the water, it is a landmark for those that live locally and visit the area.

“This wonderful position, with such quick access to the water, makes this a brilliant lifestyle opportunity.

“The opportunity also lies within the house.

“Whilst the external presentation does not suggest it, with modernised windows and relatively recent repainting of the entire house, the interiors of Staithe House are now at a point of requiring an overhaul.

“The house is not listed, so there are no restrictions for the next custodians, with the tantalising prospect of perhaps reinstating old window openings that face the broad, or to consider extending into the traditional outbuildings directly behind, which total just over 1000 sq ft.

“The house enjoys good natural light with the south facing position.”

Property agent, Ben Rivett, said: “With the endearing accolade of having been owned by the same family for more than 230 years, Staithe House presents a wonderful lifestyle opportunity for its next custodian.

“A pretty cottage in an exceptional location on the edge of Barton Turf Staithe, the property has a rich and varied history – being one of the last beerhouses in the area with a strict rule that no alcohol was to be consumed on the premises.

“Instead, patrons were passed their drink through a ‘hole in the wall’ to enjoy overlooking the water.

“Today, the house is in good external order – with modernised windows and relatively recent repainting – although the interiors require an overhaul.

“However, as the house is not listed, there are no restrictions, so there are lots of tantalising prospects – perhaps reinstating old window openings that face out to the water or extending into the traditional outbuildings directly behind.”

It is for sale with Savills with a guide price of half a million pounds.
