Fancy living in a real piece of history? Now’s your chance.
The Elms, a French Gothic-style building, has a past that includes time served as a hotel and a children’s home.
Designed by William Leiper – an architect whose portfolio includes Templeton’s Court Factory, in Glasgow – the house, built in the late-1860s, maintains stained glass windows and original features just waiting for renovation and a little TLC.

The pile, in Arbroath, is up for sale on Auction House Scotland with a starting price of £350,000, reports Luxury Property News.

Whoever buys the house won’t need to start from scratch with work as it has already been given a slight facelift – there have been roof repairs, some structural work done and asbestos has been removed.

Previous planning permission with the opportunity to convert the house into six flats and five ‘dwelling houses’ has lapsed but such an outstanding building has numerous development possibilities.

Its Location is a bonus too, with excellent transport links to Dundee and Aberdeen, and schools, shops and other amenities within a short walking distance.
But the Gothic mansion hasn’t convinced everyone who has viewed it online.

“I’d be too terrified of the weeping angels to live there,” quipped one user.
Others though have fallen in love with the place.
“Ohhh, this is beautiful! ” said one user.
An interested person commented: “This is such a stunning building. I’d buy it in a shot, ghosts and all.”

‘Absolutely stunning! Hope whoever takes this on does justice to the refurbishment and doesn’t just rip out all the features and turn it into a characterless box full of equally characterless grey furnishings,” added someone else.

“I would love to buy this and turn it into a bar/restaurant and wedding venue. Absolutely stunning.” voiced another intrigued viewer.

The auction, which will be live-streamed, takes place on August 22 at 2pm at Radisson Red hotel in Glasgow.
