A two-bed house – one of the most remote in the UK as it is nine miles from the nearest hamlet – is on the market for £120,000.

The former schoolhouse is in one of Britain’s newest designated Unesco World Heritage Sites.

It is described by agents as being a wonderfully remote location in an incredible rural location.

And as having stunning rural views.

it is in Altnabreac – described as a tiny settlement – and the nearest hamlet is that of Forsinard.

It is nine miles away and is home to less than 100 people.

Inverness is the closest big city, but that is 115 miles and a two-hour-and-50-minute drive away.

It is in Caithness in the north-eastern tip of Scotland.

Its listing states: “The settlement, notable for its remoteness, consists of the former Altnabreac School which closed in 1986 and was converted into a private residence, as reported by Luxury Property News.

“The town of Thurso is situated 23 miles north of Altnabreac holding a unique geographical distinction as the northernmost town on the island of Great Britain.

“This northern latitude gives Thurso extended daylight hours in summer and shorter days in winter.

“The town has historical significance as a Norse settlement and remains a key location for access to the Orkney Islands via the nearby Scrabster ferry port.

“A few miles east of Thurso is the Castle of Mey, the former royal residence of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is open to visitors.

“The region is characterized by a mix of rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and vast open moorlands.

“Caithness is also known for its long, sandy beaches and steep cliffs and is a haven for nature lovers, particularly those interested in birdwatching, marine life and hiking.

“Originally the schoolhouse for the local area, the property now forms a fantastic rural home.

“The accommodation is laid out over two floors and provides adaptable accommodation which is now requiring a degree of refurbishment.

“The ground floor extends to a family room, bathroom, kitchen, rear hall and the former schoolroom complete with W/C.

It is in the Flow Country, which was awarded World Heritage status by Unesco in 2024 for its 9000-year-old blanket bog landscape

The home is on sale with Bidwells for offers of more than £120,000.
