A haunted 18th century inn in Massachusetts once visited by Mark Twain is on sale for £79,000, with ghostly legends, eerie relics and a condemned but historic charm.

A ‘haunted’ inn where Mark Twain and other notable figures once stayed with 22 bedrooms has been listed for £79,000.

The 18th century barn was built in 1787.

It once offered dining, dancing, a full bar and a catering kitchen.

And those who flocked to the inn for a good time included The Prince and the Pauper writer Mark Twain and President Calvin Coolidge, reports Luxury Property News.

Now, though, it’s being flogged for a steal at $160,000 (USD) (£79,000) due to a bankruptcy notice.

Before entering, there’s a warning which reads: “Condemned. Unfit for Human Habitation”, that has been signed off by the Board of Health with a ‘No Trespassing’ sign.

The realtors, Coldwell Banker, went into the property after sageing it – a spiritual practice which aims to cleanse a space of negative energy.

They also said: “We enter in peace and we are not allowing anything to enter us or come home with us”.

Inside, through rusted and rotting doors, there’s old signage, a payphone and dated books still open on the last page read.

Other artefacts include artwork, dolls and cups which are growing new ecosystems.

And then things get quite spooky.

An old dress still hangs in one of the bedrooms, with not one speck of dust, despite not being touched for years.

Messages, such as “Hell” and “Help” are inscribed on the walls.

The stairs leading up to the property appear rotten, as does the door, though the main sign, which reads: “1776 THE INN’ has remained intact.

At the back, shrubbery and other greenery is overgrown.

The inn, located in Charlemont, Massachusetts, US, sits on the historic Mohawk Trail and has lots of great areas for hiking, camping and white-water rafting nearby.

It’s believed there’s a ghost of a teenage girl called Elizabeth who lurks through the halls and over the years, many psychics and mediums have attended the property.

Other spirits include a little boy and girl and a cat.

Though, anybody who has stayed there says each presence was “welcoming and friendly”.

It’s for sale along with a single family house and will be handed over in the current condition.
