A village hall in the heart of a community is for sale – but there’s a catch.
The building called the Reading Room will need work after falling into disrepair.
Built in 1885 by the lord of the manor, the venue was once used as somewhere for local residents and farmers to read newspapers and other materials.

It was also used for parties, village meetings, hand bell ringing, sports and entertainment.
But the kitchen and toilet blocks at the back of the property are dilapidated.

The ceiling is damaged, there is peeling wallpaper and what appears to be mould.
The venue is in Upminster, Essex, as reported by Luxury Property News.
Its listing states: “The main hall is in reasonable condition and lends itself to conversion subject to local authority approval or re-instatement.
“The kitchen and toilet blocks to the rear are in a dilapidated state but if planning was granted for residential status, this would make a great garden area.

“The front garden could also provide off street parking.
“The property is located in a semi rural area off Ockendon Road with Ockendon and Upminster Stations and several schools within a two mile radius.
“The 370 bus route provides services to both Romford and Lakeside so although you could enjoy living in the country, shops and restaurants are all accessible.”
It is being sold by agents Delaney’s with a guide price of £200,000 to £250,000.
