A stunning country home once owned by King Charles has gone on the market for £4.5 million – and he can still visit, provided he gives 24 hours’ notice.

Nestled within the heart of Dartmoor National Park sits Brimptsmead Estate, an Edwardian country residence originally commissioned as a private hunting lodge.

Sold by the King back in 1993, His Majesty still retains the right to fish from the property, provided he gives 24 hours’ prior notice – meaning the new owner could be sharing the beautiful surroundings with royalty.

Surrounded by land still largely held by the Duchy, the estate agents describe the property as a “truly rare opportunity to own freehold land in one of the most protected and treasured landscapes in the UK”.

Set on nine acres of land, the main house has been “exquisitely restored” and boasts six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a host of living areas spread across 5,984sq ft.

Also on the estate are two cottages, a granite-built party barn and extensive garaging as reported by Luxury Property News.

The seller, who has not been named, described the historic home as a place of “beauty and deep tranquillity”, and was invited to an interview in London after expressing interest in purchasing it back in the 90s.

They undertook an extensive restoration of the property, with “every decision made with authenticity in mind”.

Some of those changes include handcrafted leaded windows, bronze door handles, restored original oak and satinwood panelling, cast iron radiators being fitted, and discreet underfloor heating.

The owners retained nine working fireplaces, and said the home became their family’s “sanctuary”, adding: “From evening gatherings in the panelled drawing room, to quiet mornings in the turret, to watching the sun set from the Shed’s balcony, Brimptsmead has been a place to live, to love, and to remember.”

Set away from the main house are the two cottages – named Bentley and Herb – which offer self-contained accommodation for guests, extended family or staff.

Meanwhile, outside, Brimptsmead enjoys a private, south-facing, and elevated position within Dartmoor National Park, with no public rights of way crossing the land.

The grounds are beautifully established with lawns, ancient woodland, grass meadow and a gently sloping grass field where a gate leads onto open Duchy farm land.

The property is currently on the market with By Design for £4.5 million.
